Sentimental crisis ending; song analysis
(kaguya sama Love is War ED1 lyrics | Sentimental Crisis by Halca)
One of the reasons why I’m talking about this ending is because kaguya-sama is my favorite rom-com anime. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy a good laugh? Now and days most rom-com isn’t appealing, but this was one of those shows that didn’t require much background information for me to appreciate it. It’s a light-hearted show, that follows two tsuns who are too stubborn for their own good to confess their undying love for one another.
Every step of the way, I was enthralled to see the steps that kaguya and Miyuki took to confess that they were madly in love with one another. It’s fun to witness how they play mind games to force the other to admit it. To them, love is a battlefield, if you make the first move then you are surrendering to be under your partners control for the rest of your life. Although, I want to talk about how the last episode tied in with the ending song, “Sentimental Crisis.”
For sure right now you and I are feeling the same
If you smile at me
I can keep being an angel
I assume the first three lines focus on Kaguya’s past life. As we enter her dream, you can tell there’s something wrong with her mentally. She is isolated and feels unloved by her family. The anime may not have touched over it as much, but kaguya is not happy with her past. When she was younger, her father would emotionally neglect her. She has never been able to receive the proper amount of love. Due to this, she is constantly searching for the desire to have romantic and familial love. The way her family raised her, made it hard for her to express her feelings to Miyuki. Kaguya wants to live a normal life. She wants to be like everyone else. She wants to have ordinary friends, relationships, and hardships. Despite how much her and Miyuki play their mind games on one another, she loves him very much. Without him, she can’t be the “angel” she is and fly away from the feeling of derelict kaguya’s father left her with. However, she is ashamed of her self. She was taught to live under her families name and fulfill their duties. Kaguya had a friend at one point, however they couldn’t stand to be near her and only gotten close because they were forced. It became increasingly hard to make friends and as she grew older she began acting extremely bitter. Kaguya grew up as perfect and uncaring of people’s emotions. Once she joined the student council and met Miyuki, she realizes that as long as her love for him doesn’t stop, she can strive to be an angel and escape the individual her family arranged her to be. That’s what those three lines symbolize. She is able to conquer her past-self, and Miyuki is her escape.
Thoughts/Opinions: It only mentioned a bit about kaguya’s personal life outside of the student council. However, this scene persuaded me to understand more about her past life and why she acts the way the does toward others. It does a good job at creating an image of how she’s sad with her character, and that’s why she’s crying. It made me want to listen to the song more, because Kaguya doesn’t strike me as the one to cry. She is usually more cold and hides her emotions deep inside.
I realized that I’m being tested
It’s kind of like I’m playing a game, but I can’t pull away now
Let me trick you
In the scene above, kaguya is moping because her father won’t let her see the fireworks and she’s trapped in the aircraft, while thinking about how she wants to be with her friends. Kaguya is ashamed and just wants to feel worthy of being loved by someone as nice Miyuki. These lines represent her showing that she’s capability of receiving love, regardless of her cold personality. As I said before, she is aware that she’s in love with Miyuki and how much he helped her regain the confidence to make friends, however she is too shy and scared to admit that she likes him. In order to get his attention, she plays tricks on him and tries to out-play Miyuki and lure him into admitting that he’s attracted to her. She’ll do whatever it takes, even if it means keeping her tsuntsun attitude so Miyuki won’t read her emotions. Part of that, ties in with how kaguya was taught to view people as she grew up. She learned not to show emotion, unless it was used to control others. Instead of actually tying to make friends, she would see how she could take advantage of them. Being with miyuki made her slowly become more caring and nice. She doesn’t want to confess to Miyuki because she knows that if she does it’ll hurt their relationship. That’s exactly why she continues to play her mind games, because she feels unworthy to love someone who is kind, ordinary, and as nice as Miyuki. She began to accept where her life was bitter and low, all because of him.
Thoughts/Opinion: Truthfully, I think, her dad is trying to make her miserable. All kaguya wants to do is hang with her friends, but her dad is keeping her hostage. I mean, she has a life too. I felt sad for Kaguya, although she doesn’t speak on it much you could tell she is definitely hurting inside and wants to be loved. We don’t get to see Kaguya dad in the anime, but she wants to be loved by him as well. Since she can’t get that love from her father, she wants to get it from her friends. However, her dad wants her to be cold and not get close to anyone. Hopefully, one day, kaguya and Miyuki get a chance to fall in love and he’ll surpass him and give him a piece of his mind. However, I never see that happening if they keep denying their feelings for one another.

I hope you get tricked, I hope you get confused
And at the end, tell me that you love me
How are you and I going to fall in love?
looking for the relation
Kaguya finally breaks out and is determined to find Miyuki. She shoots past everything that’s in her way and just right before she leaves the aircraft, she sprouts her angel wings. The first line represents how Kaguya doesn’t want Miyuki to know about her emotions, but no matter how hard she try’s to hide them they always intertwine one way or another. Despite each thinking they set up this perfect trap, while the other is in the palm of their hands. Under her tsuntsun attitude she really loves Miyuki and wants him to confess his feelings, but they both are too stubborn for their own good and refuse to be the one to admit. There’s no more denying their emotions for one another, that’s for sure. Although, they both legit have reasons for not wanting to confess. No matter how many mind games they play, they continue to regard their feelings because the fear of losing each other. This is why Kaguya says, “how are you and I going to fall in love, looking for the relation.” The point is, both of them are oblivious to the fact that they are in love, but feel as if they aren’t good enough or as if they will get rejected. However, this part really focused on kaguya blossoming out of her shell and saving herself from the mistreatment of her father. As you see above, kaguya sprouts her angel wings and fights her way out of the aircraft because her father told her she couldn’t go out on the day of the fireworks. On the other hand, Miyuki and kaguya’s friends are determined to save her as well(show her the fireworks).
Thoughts/Opinions: Finally, Kaguya grew some balls and escaped her father’s will. This scene was the best scene, and it was emotionally pleasing to watch as she grabbed that gun and sprouted her wings. I was literally like, “yess, kaguya, you go girl.” I now understand how neglected she feels and why she desires to be loved so much. Since kaguya usually has an ice-cold attitude and was told to show no emotion, it’s hard to tell if she’s in love with Miguki or not. However, we all know that she is and that’s a part of her she can’t hide. That’s why this scene is so cute. It makes you want to route for kaguya’s escape.
I don’t have anything to spare every time you stare at me
Im always shaking
Take the part of me that can’t be honest
_________________________
In the scene above, kaguya is reaching out to Miyuki and seconds after he grabs on to her hand, while her friends await her in a separate aircraft. During the firework arc, kaguya was trapped inside of her house. Although, she doesn’t give up and sneaks out so she can see her lover and friends. Miyuki, on the other hand, goes around searching for her on his bike, determined that he will show the fireworks to kaguya. Not too long after, she reunites with her friends. This is an a metaphor when compared to the last scene when kaguya jumps out of the aircraft into Miyuki’s arms. Toward the end of the firework arc, her heart was beating too loud, she couldn’t hear the fireworks. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t take her eyes off of Miyuki. This correlates with these lines because all in all kaguya is a shy girl. She hides her emotions through her tsun attitude, however when the perfect time comes around to confess, she can’t bring herself to admit it. At that point, she wanted to confess to Miyuki just as much as Miyuki wanted to confess to her. Although, she couldn’t bring herself to do it because she’s too shy. She’ll rather stay true to her tsun demeanor, however Miyuki can’t read her mind, so she wants him to say, I love you instead.
Thoughts/Opinions: At the end, she made it out safely and was able to see her friends and lover. What a heart-warming resolution. It was so adorable and sweet to watch as she grabbed on to Miyuki’s hand. That’s a perfect way to end a rom-com song. However, you could tell that kaguya wasn’t expecting Miyuki or her friends to come to her rescue. Ultimately, they all had her back and that’s what true friends are for. Everyone was happy to see each-other. Clearly, for the first time in her life she was showing rare genuine emotion.
In conclusion
I had no idea how symbolic this ending was. Maybe others realized and I didn’t. However, this still remains my favorite for this show, both visual and sound-wise. It focuses on things such as kaguya’s past life and how she escaped from her father’s neglect. All she wants is to be with her friends and more importantly, Miyuki. They helped her achieve an ordinary life, kaguya thought she would never have. When she woke up from nap, it was obvious that she had to overcome struggles of her own. Regardless, she was able to overpower that and truly accept herself for who she is with the help of her friends and Miyuki.
