Girls' Last Tour review

“Let’s get along with the feeling of hopelessness” - Yuuri

Today, I’ll be talking about a show that I not only enjoyed till the end but also got me thinking. Girls’ Last Tour is a show that may have a dark setting yet have characters that always look up to the bright side rather than give up. At first glance, you might think that the show's main theme is war. However, in reality, it's about continuing to do what you do despite having chaos happening all around you. Personally, I loved watching every minute of the show despite focusing on a dark concept that may possibly occur someday. I enjoyed the main characters and how they discover normal everyday stuff as they travel through the higher ground. In my opinion, I would recommend this to everyone because despite taking place in a post-apocalyptic landscape, the main characters and their wholesomeness throughout the show will leave you wanting for more as much as I do. As much as I love the ending, I kinda wished that there would be Season 2 because I wanted to know whether Chito and Yuuri finally arrived at the highest level and whether they encountered more humans. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope that there are some people out there who still remember this show and love it to this day.

 Plot

For those who haven’t watched the show, it centers on a pair of girls named Chito and Yuuri who travel and explore a barren wasteland where they scavenge from what’s left of society. As they travel through the desolate city, they ponder and talk about the past as time passes by. Even though there are times where Chito and Yuuri feel lonely seeing how they are one of the last humans on Earth, they have each other’s company which makes living in a bleak and barren world feel less depressing. Throughout the show, we follow these two girls and how they continue to find hope and see each day as brighter than the last.

I first discovered this show when I heard of their catchy opening. However, I didn’t pay much attention to the show since it’s not really talked about in my area. It took me a while until I finally watched it recently after it finished a year ago. When I watched the first episode, I immediately regret not watching this show when it finished airing its last episode. As I continued watching this show, I learned how the world of Girls’ Last Tour might be the world that we might soon live in. The world of Girls’ Last Tour became a destroyed world thanks to technology and war. As technology becomes more advanced and cities become more sophisticated, there are some people who abuse technology and use it for making bad decisions. The show also touches upon the subject on why there are countless wars have occurred throughout the years. Girls’ Last Tour teaches us the effects of war and technological advancements. However, the show doesn’t actually focus on the dark subjects but more on the optimistic side and how you can enjoy every moment in your life when you have company. One of my favorite things about the show is how they focus on two characters and their wholesome antics even though their world has crumbled and might no longer recover. The two characters may be complete opposites yet share surprising chemistry with each other and form a strong bond throughout the show. It’s a show that I’m sure everyone will love and remember due to its themes and its characters.

Before I watched this show, my initial thoughts about it would be that it would center around two girls doing cute things. I didn’t consider the fact that they were wearing military or army uniforms or the fact that one of them was carrying a gun. Once I finally took the time to watch this show, it was beyond my expectations. I love slice of life anime. It’s relaxing to watch shows that do normal every day things but with a hint of spice for viewers to enjoy. I honestly didn’t expect this show to have a slice of life genre at all. However, I was still able to enjoy this show to the fullest and I consider this show as one of my favourite slice of life shows of all time. I don’t know if I’m the only one who expected this show to be all cute and innocent, because the show’s character designs are deceiving. But once you look past their designs, you’ll see yourself enjoying a nice slice of life anime that might leave you wanting for more.

Characters

When I was first introduced to Chito, I saw her as the brains between her and Yuuri. I expected her to act a bit annoying or obnoxious considering who her partner is throughout the show. However, I was wrong and I couldn’t decide who my favorite character is between the two. Chito is seen as someone who is eager to learn more about the past and collects books as they journey throughout the wastelands. Even though she appears as someone who doesn’t fear anything, she does have her quirks which shows the viewers and characters in the show her vulnerability. One of the reasons why I love Chito is how she’s mostly seen as calm throughout the show. Even when she’s fully aware that there won’t be a happy ending at the end of the road, she makes the most of each day and continues traveling with Yuuri. Maybe it might be because of Yuuri that she continues living in a world where there’s no hope for humanity to live. Even though she doesn’t show it easily, she’s happy that she has someone like Yuuri to accompany her on her travels.

On the other hand, Yuuri is introduced as a happy-go-lucky girl who makes a lot of trouble throughout the show which Chito has to deal with every single day. She displays a carefree attitude and doesn’t really care about the situation they’re in. However, don’t underestimate her because she can handle a gun and she uses it well. I admire Yuuri because she’s always emitting a positive aura around her which makes me more relaxed when I’m watching a show where she and Chito have to survive. However, there are also times where I fear Yuuri and her capabilities seeing how there are times where she kinda shows her dark side.  But I still enjoyed her quirkiness and how she doesn’t really care about anything except for food.

Some of you might think that Chito and Yuuri wouldn’t get along, seeing as their personalities are so different from one another. Chito is the one who handles most decisions and having a calm composure while Yuuri being easy-going and carefree. At first glance, you wouldn’t think that they would actually form a strong bond throughout the show. However, in reality, they actually get along with each other despite being complete opposites. Even though Yuuri may occasionally annoy both Chito and the viewers, she deeply cares for her only companion and tries to help her in any way she can. On the other hand, Chito may not show it sometimes, but she also cares for Yuuri and tries to prevent her from doing anything reckless. I love Chito and Yuuri’s relationship with one another because it’s not every day where a pair of complete opposites have amazing chemistry with another. Even though they don’t really know it, they both bring the best out of each other. I enjoyed their interactions with each other and how they make each day of their lives feel fun and lively. They were able to form a strong connection which shows the viewers that Chito and Yuuri will have an unbreakable bond that will last a lifetime.

At first, you would expect Chito and Yuuri to act serious throughout the show, seeing as their trying to survive in a world where there’s isn’t that much left to scavenge. Instead, they act as if it’s a normal everyday thing and they’re not freaking out on running out of supplies. This is one of the reasons why I enjoy Chito and Yuuri’s personality. Instead of being tense alongside the two girls, you find yourself relaxed. Each episode, I found myself smiling every time I would see the girls. You wouldn’t expect them to survive this long in a wasteland, yet they were able to not only gather supplies but they were also able to keep a calm composure instead of freaking out. Even though their interactions seem mundane, you see yourself enjoying their little interactions with each and their world. When I finished watching the show, I wish that it would never end because I missed seeing Yuuri’s shenanigans and Chito trying to prevent Yuuri from eating the fish. I do hope that they continue to strengthen their friendship and that they wouldn’t separate from each other. As much as they are complete opposites, they not only bring the best out of each other but they also need each other as companions.

What I Love About the Show

If you were placed in a show like Girls’ Last Tour, you would feel the fear of trying to survive in a world where there’s not that much left to scavenge. It’s much scarier if you’re exploring the world with no one by your side to help you. You feel a sense of loneliness that you might not be able to encounter someone who can comfort or help you in times of need.  Girls’ Last Tour mainly doesn’t focus on the negative topics such as war, but more on the positive side and how a companion can make your day seem a lot brighter. Throughout the show, it teaches the viewers that we should always appreciate the little things in life. Even when life doesn’t go your way, you should always look up to the bright side and never give up just like Chito and Yuuri.

In an atmosphere that doesn’t show a lot of positivity, Chito and Yuuri’s activities in the world light up the whole room every time you see them. You can’t help but awe at their wholesomeness and how easily it can warm your heart at their strong bond for each other. At first, I expected this show to be really serious seeing how its world feels really depressing. However, once I saw Chito and Yuuri and how well they complement each other, their world feels a lot brighter now that they’re on the screen. I do hope that I get to see more shows that are like Girls’ Last Tour because it’s not every day that you come across a dark show that delivers a set of cute characters that make the show a lot lighthearted.

Another thing that I love about the show is how it builds up the world. Even though the show has a slow pace, it has a relaxing feeling as we journey with Chito and Yuuri as we slowly start unraveling their world bit by bit. Even though I know that the show doesn’t center around Chito and Yuuri trying to reach the highest level, the show feels less serious when there isn’t a final destination to Chito and Yuuri’s journey. There’s no safe house that Chito and Yuuri are trying to reach.  There’s no one waiting for them at the end of the journey. They are just traveling without any goal but to gather supplies and rations so that they could live another day. I understand that some of you might get bored of watching this show since there isn’t that much going on. However, what makes this show enjoyable is Chito and Yuuri’s antics. I wished that there would have been more focus on the world of Girls’ Last Tour, but I was still able to enjoy the show. I admire how fearless these two girls are when they are placed in a world where there’s danger happening around every corner. Even though there are times where it feels a bit sad having only Chito and Yuuri travel as the show progresses, it feels refreshing when there are side characters introduced which makes both Chito and Yuuri not lose hope on the fact that there might be more people who are still living in a world where there are fewer supplies and rations left. I wished that they would have stayed longer since they have made an impact on Chito and Yuuri’s lives even when it was only for an episode.

I understand that there might be shows that hold both the dark themes of the show yet have cute characters that make the show less dark and more wholesome. However, Girls’ Last Tour is one of those shows that strike out to me. Despite having a few flaws here and there, it’s masked by the aspects that make this show almost a masterpiece. I regret that I underestimated a show that really hit me deep when it comes to the mind. I couldn’t decide on whether I should enjoy the show for its wholesomeness and message about company or whether I should consider the fact that the show might be foreshadowing something that might happen in our near future. I wish the show is still remembered by past viewers, because I consider this show as one of a kind. As for those who haven’t watched it yet, I really recommend it this show to you because it might either change your perspective on our world or you might start cherishing your closest companions.

Final Thoughts
As much as I want to recommend this to everyone, I’m sure that not a lot of people will love this seeing how it has a slow and relaxing pace as the show progresses. However, take a chance and watch this show because you never know if you might find yourself loving it. It’s surprising that I was able to watch a show that combines the dark and dreary atmosphere and themes and the adorable characters and their light-hearted interactions. I hope that I can be able to watch more anime that have a similar combination to Girls’ Last Tour. Behind all that cuteness and wholesomeness, there’s a much darker message that might awaken some of the viewers and have them thinking if our world might be closer to theirs. At first glance, you might think that this show might be innocent, but once you watch it, it might exceed your expectations and you might find yourself underestimating a show that is darker than you think.
